The Construction of the Paraduxx Winery
In the fall of 2005, we completed the Paraduxx Winery, which now houses barrels that are aging the 2005 Paraduxx wines.
The Paraduxx winery is located on a 45-acre parcel of creek side vineyard land along the Silverado Trail in the Yountville appellation of Napa Valley. The property includes a winery, as well as Paraduxx's Vineyard House for wine tasting and retail sales.
The dramatic centerpiece of the Paraduxx Winery is a unique ten-sided fermentation cellar, inspired by traditional round barns. Designed in consultation with the Paraduxx winemaking team, this building crushed grapes for the 2005 harvest, housing a highly efficient, state-of-the-art winemaking facility including numerous custom-made fermentation tanks arrayed in a circle around the surrounding walls. At the center of the winery is a traditional basket press for the extraction of free run juice. This highly functional and aesthetically pleasing configuration allows direct access between the press and all of the tanks.
From the outside, the Paraduxx Vineyard House is a contemporary take on a typical Napa Valley farmhouse, and includes a sweeping covered veranda overlooking the winery and the surrounding Rector Creek Vineyard. Inside, natural light has been combined with exposed beams and contemporary finishings. Fourteen foot windows frame the courtyard and fermentation building, reminding guests of the hands-on winemaking practices as they experience Paraduxx wines.
Comments from the Architects
"The winery site is characteristic of historic farmstead enclaves found throughout the Napa Valley. The design concept was influenced by the historic structures that typify ageless wineries. Construction materials include board and batten wood siding combined with stone veneer foundations that reflect the ancient stonewall found at the perimeter of the site.
